Sussex County Schools Participate in the "SCREEN" Sun Safety Project

May 22, 2012 Newton, NJ - The Sussex County Cancer Coalition and Department of Environmental and Public Health Services is pleased to announce that the Sun Safety Project "SCREEN" is happening now throughout the County. The purpose of the program is to provide students in the 3rd, 4th and 5th grades with education about sun safety and adopting sun safe behaviors.

The Skin Cancer Reduction-Early Education Network or "SCREEN" project is evidence based sun safety intervention that Sussex County Cancer Coalition has participated in for the past several years. This program has incorporated the counties in New Jersey with the highest rates of Melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer. Unfortunately, Sussex County has the ranking of 5th in the state.

Sussex County Cancer Coalition has identified seven schools and one after school program to participate in this year's project, including

  • Florence M. Burd School in Andover Township
  • Green Hills School in Green Township
  • Hamburg School in Hamburg
  • Stanhope School in Stanhope
  • Merriam Avenue School in Newton
  • Lafayette School in Lafayette
  • Franklin School in Franklin
