Press Release - Sentencing of Charles Southard

     Sussex County Prosecutor Francis A. Koch announced the sentencing of Charles Southard, who appeared before the Honorable William J. McGovern III, J.S.C., at the Sussex County Courthouse in Newton on March 31, 2017.

     Southard, age 27 of Hamburg, was sentenced to four years of probation and 60 days in the Keogh-Dwyer Correctional Facility with credit for 11 days time served.  He was ordered to submit to a TASC evaluation and follow any and all recommendations made from same and pay fines and fees totaling $155.00.  His driver license was ordered suspended for six months.

     He pled guilty on November 28, 2016, to Theft, a fourth degree crime, and Burglary, a third degree crime.  He pled guilty on January 23, 2017, to Failure to Turn Over a Controlled Dangerous Substance, a disorderly persons offense, and Defiant Trespass, a petty disorderly persons offense.

     The defendant took an iPad from a Franklin residence on June 26, 2016.  He also entered a structure in Wantage for the purpose of committing a theft on August 21, 2016.  On December 19, 2016, he trespassed inside a Spring Street building in Newton and failed to turn over a controlled dangerous substance.

     Southard was represented by Steven Insley, Esq., and the State was represented by Assistant Prosecutor Brent Rafuse.
