Press Release - Arrest of Richard Boydston

Sussex County Prosecutor, Francis A. Koch, announces that on April 19, 2017 Richard Boydston of Vernon Township was arrested and charged with the following: second degree Attempted Sexual Assault in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:14-2c(4)/N.J.S.A. 2C:5-1a(1), second degree Luring in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:13-6a, third degree Endangering the Welfare of a Child in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:24-4a(1), third degree Obscenities to a Minor in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:34-3b(1), and fourth degree Attempted Criminal Sexual Contact in violation of N.J.S.A. 2C:14-3b. The charges stem from an undercover investigation in which Richard Boydston had communications with a Detective of the High Tech Crimes Unit of the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, utilizing the persona of a fourteen (14) year old female. It is alleged that Richard Boydston had sexually explicit conversations with what he believed to be a fourteen (14) year old female via the website Chatstep.com and text messaging. Richard Boydston then made arrangements to meet in person with what he believed to be the fourteen (14) year old and was arrested by law enforcement.
The case was investigated by the High Tech Crimes Unit of the Sussex County Prosecutor’s Office, a member of the New Jersey Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force. A court date has been set for May 22, 2017 for an Early Disposition Conference. The investigation is ongoing.
