Summer Reading 2022 – Oceans of Possibilities

Newton NJ – The Sussex County Library System (SCLS) Summer Reading Program kicks off on Saturday, June 25 with a special opening event at each branch celebrating the summer reading theme: Oceans of Possibilities.

A Splash of Magic is an action-packed reading adventure with magical storyteller Conrad Cologne. This family-fun entertainment combines magic, comedy, storytelling and amazing books. There are three opportunities join in the fun: Franklin Branch in Franklin at 10:00 a.m., Dennis Branch in Newton at 1:00 p.m., and Main Library in Frankford at 3:00 p.m.

Dive into Books with Brian Richards combines magic, comedy, puppets and excellent storytelling for all ages. There are three chances to catch this amazing act: Sussex-Wantage in Wantage at 11:00 a.m., Dorothy Henry Branch in Vernon at 1:00 p.m., and Louise Childs Branch in Hopatcong at 3:00 p.m.

Kickoff programs are just the beginning of Summer Reading fun. Every SCLS location will host a wide variety of programs from Groovy Guppies storytimes for the youngest readers (6 months to 2-years old) to an Ocean Trivia Game Night for teens. The whole family is invited to Zoom in on Aquarium Adventures every Thursday from June 30-August 4 at 3:00 p.m. Each week will bring a virtual visit with professional staff and virtual tours of places like Mystic Aquarium in Connecticut, and Jenkinson’s Aquarium at our very own Jersey Shore.

There are plenty of Summer Reading incentives and prizes too. Children, teens and adults all earn points/raffle tickets for each book read or listened to, and every summer reading program attended. Over 100 prizes will be awarded, from beach toys for babies to a metal detector for adults; plus lots of summer fun at the County Fair, Lake Tomahawk, Laser One, Castle Cove and more. The Sussex County Library would like to thank Thorlabs, and all the wonderful local businesses who contributed to the Summer Reading prize pool.

This year there are two ways to join in: sign up at any branch, keep a reading log and collect paper raffle tickets; or by using  READsquared, an online tool that allows participants to log their reading, leave reviews, complete missions and enter secret codes from attending programs to earn points.

Summer Reading registration begins June 18, logging reading and activities runs from June 24-August 6, and prize winners will be contacted the week of August 15. Participation is open to all SCLS cardholders. SCLS library cards are free to anyone who lives, works or attends school in Sussex County (except Sparta).

Stop by your local branch or go to the Summer Reading page at sussexcountylibrary.org for complete details on Summer Reading registration; program dates and times; and a list of all the prizes generously donated by local businesses.
