On May 15, 1942 the first Sussex County Library opened in the basement of the Sussex County Hall of Records. By year's end the library had a collection of over 8,000 books and a 1936 International book truck to circulate them throughout the county. Today the Sussex County Library System (SCLS) serves the county's population through six locations that circulate more than 600,000 items per year.
The Main Library, located in Frankford, is the heart of the system where library materials are ordered and sent to all the branches; and where a knowledgeable, friendly reference librarian can always be found to answer questions. The five branch libraries are: Dennis Memorial in Newton, Dorothy E. Henry Memorial in Vernon, Franklin Branch in Franklin, E. Louise Childs Memorial in Hopatcong and the Sussex-Wantage Branch in Wantage.
It is the mission of the SCLS to provide the residents of Sussex County with resources and services that contribute toward the fulfillment of their educational, informational and recreational needs. Print books are just the beginning. There are also audiobooks, downloadable audio, e-books, newspapers and magazines, CDs, DVDs, videogames, and databases that cover everything from auto repair to zoological studies. Every location has computers for public use with high-speed internet access and the latest office programs; and WiFi for people who bring their own devices. The libraries are also a community gathering place with meeting rooms available for public use whenever they aren't needed for story hours and other library-related programs.
Library cards are free to individuals who live, work or attend school in Sussex County. Sparta residents are not eligible for cards from the Sussex County Library System, but can use the libraries through our Open Borrowing policy as long as they are patrons in good standing with Sparta. The Open Borrowing system is reciprocal and allows SCLS patrons to use the Sparta Library as well as libraries in Passaic, Morris, Bergen, Middlesex and Warren Counties.
Check out the SCLS website, http://www.sussexcountylibrary.org . It is the gateway to everything the library offers. From the homepage you can access the catalog, reserve or renew library materials, use the research databases, review the program calendars and much, much more.
