Join the Smokey Bear Reading Challenge at SCLS

Sussex County, NJ – The Sussex County Library System (SCLS) is thrilled to announce its participation in the 2024 Smokey Bear Reading Challenge, an exciting reading adventure beginning August 1 and continuing throughout the fall. In celebration of Smokey Bear's 80th birthday, SCLS joins libraries nationwide to help children and families learn about wildfires and the environment through engaging and educational activities.

Program Details:

Dates: August 1 - November 30

Who: Geared for children ages 4 to 10, but all ages are welcome

Where: Visit any local SCLS branch to participate

How to Participate: Parents and caregivers can pick up a Smokey Bear Reading Challenge log at any SCLS branch or download the printable version from SmokeyBear.com. Children are encouraged to read at least three books on wildfire prevention or the environment and earn four badges to complete the challenge. Upon completion, they can bring their log to any SCLS branch to receive a special prize.

New Jersey Forest Fire Service with Smokey Bear
Monday, August 26 at 10:00 am at Dorothy Henry Branch in Vernon
Thursday, August 29 at 11:30 am at Sussex-Wantage Branch in Sussex
Join Smokey Bear at the Dorothy Henry and Sussex-Wantage branches for an engaging program on fire prevention, campfire safety, and the NJ Forest Fire Service.

Forest Ecology for Kids
Thursday, September 19 at 12:30 pm at Franklin Branch in Franklin
Join Kate Foord, Park Naturalist at High Point State Park, at the Franklin Branch to discuss forest ecology through interactive stories, games, and "please touch" artifacts.

Join SCLS in celebrating Smokey Bear’s 80th birthday and help Smokey spread awareness about wildfire prevention and environmental stewardship. And remember: only you can prevent wildfires.
