On  Oct. 9th & 10th, historical museums and heritage organizations will join with the Sussex County Arts and Heritage Council for its 11th Annual Heritage Weekend. Take this opportunity to explore and experience the many varied facets of history and culture in Sussex County.

Many Sussex County's volunteer-run historical sites will again welcome residents and visitors alike.  All NJ State Park and Federal buildings remain regulated by those agencies, and some of their historic partner sites can again be accessed - preferably by appt.

This year's participating historic sites are: Branchville Borough's Historical Museum, Byram's Roseville Schoolhouse Museum, Franklin's Heritage Museum, Lafayette’s Ludlum-Mabee House, Lake Hopatcong’s Historical Museum,  Newton’s Hill Memorial Museum, Ogdensburg’s Old Schoolhouse and Firehouse Museum,  Peter’s Valley School of Craft Gallery, Stillwater's Historical Museum, Sparta's Van Kirk Homestead Museum and the Sparta Train station, Vernon’s  Price’s Switch Schoolhouse, Walpack’s Van Campen Inn, and Wantage’s Old Clove Church and also the Van Bunschooten Museum. A 2021 addition is Hardyston’s Old Monroe School House.

Visit the Waterloo Village Historic Site, drive over the Western Highlands Scenic Byway, and stroll through the White Deer Plaza and Boardwalk Historic District as well as check these other Historic Districts: Newton Town Plot, Lafayette Village, Peters Valley, Walpack Center, and  Old Mine Road.  Hike our trails, including some at historic Lusscroft Farm and High Point State Park & New Jersey Veterans' Memorial.

Our historical society sites do not charge admission during this weekend - but appreciate all donations & any volunteers who can support their efforts. The few who may have a special presentation - the info is noted on the interactive site.                                                                                            We likewise feature local farms and farm markets that reflect our agricultural heritage. There will also be some one day festivals that weekend at the Fairgrounds in Augusta, at Lafayette Village, on Spring St. in Newton, and in Stillwater.

Visit to access a printable brochure.  A presentation of the historical sites being featured this weekend is posted there.                                                                                                                                                                         To view the interactive map with its detailed info - kindly use this link:      Most of Sussex County’s Historic Markers are indicated on the map.
