Nutritional Options for Eligible Seniors
(Newton, NJ) Sussex County seniors age 60 and older are normally able to access a nutritious, midday meal and an opportunity to socialize through the County Congregate Nutrition Program at one of three senior nutrition sites which are located in Vernon, Hopatcong and Franklin. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, all congregate nutrition service locations statewide remain closed. The County of Sussex continues to seek innovative ways to support the senior population during the current public health crisis.
The County recognizes the need to continue to provide meals to individuals who face nutritional risks. Since March 2020, the Division of Senior Services delivers frozen meals to vulnerable participants in the Congregate Nutrition Program. The Division of Senior Services also works with various County partners to ensure seniors who are at risk for nutritional deficiencies receive additional food beyond what is provided through the frozen meal deliveries.
The County of Sussex is pleased to announce a new hot meal option through the Senior Services "Grab and Go" lunch initiative. Seniors age 60 and older who have the ability to travel to either the Hopatcong or Vernon Senior Centers, have the opportunity to obtain a hot lunch.
All meals provided are certified to provide one-third of the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) of nutrients and vitamins. Reservations for meals are required no later than 9:30 a.m. on the day before the available pick-up date. There is also a suggested, voluntary donation of $2.00 per meal to help offset costs incurred.
Please note that there is protected, outdoor seating available at each location for dining. However, please be advised that social distancing is required and there are additional policies posted at each site that must be observed. While this outdoor seating is provided for the convenience of individuals who wish to stay and eat, the County does not offer "official" outdoor dining for the Congregate Nutrition Program at this time and those that stay do so at their own risk.
The Division of Senior Services continuously monitors the ever changing developments and data received in relation to this pandemic and any alterations to the programs will be driven by the information received. For questions, please call 973-579-0555, ext. 1285 for information about the program. To reserve and pick up a hot meal, please call the Hopatcong Senior Center at 973-398-2608 or the Vernon Senior Center at 973-764-5454.
