Release Date: September 17, 2010

"Sussex County Freeholders Express Support for Potential Merger of Newton Memorial Hospital and Atlantic Health System"

The Sussex County Board of Chosen Freeholders has expressed its full support of the potential merger of Newton Memorial Hospital and Atlantic Health System.

In a Letter of Support, directed to Poonam Alaigh, MD, Commissioner, NJ Department of Health and Senior Services, and forwarded to Newton Memorial Hospital for submission to the State, Freeholder Director Jeffrey M. Parrott, on behalf of the Freeholder Board, cited the Hospital's more than 75 years of providing exceptional healthcare to the local community and its commitment to maintain the highest of medical standards.

With New Jersey hospitals facing enormous challenges during these strained economic times, a merger with Atlantic Health System will allow for more outpatient and preventive medicine services; broader access to pediatric and other specialists; clinical trials; and interventions and advanced protocols for emergent care, including complex stroke care, the latest cardiac interventions and sophisticated neonatal care.

Freeholder Director Parrott stated, "Newton Memorial is and will continue to be an integral part of the Sussex County community. A merger with Atlantic Health System will allow for enhanced healthcare benefits and medical technology, not only in the near future for our community, but for our children's children, as well."
