Domestic violence is a pattern of behaviors used by one partner to maintain power and control over another partner in an intimate relationship. It includes behaviors that physically harm, arouse fear, prevent a partner from doing what they wish or force them to behave in ways they do not want.*

The Domestic Violence Act (N.J.S.A. 2C:25-17 et seq.) is a series of laws designed to protect victims of domestic violence. Depending upon the offense committed, your case will be handled at the Superior, Family, or Municipal level.

If you are a victim of domestic violence, call 911 or your local police department for immediate assistance. For information regarding cases being handled at the Family or Superior Court level, please contact the Sussex County Prosecutor's Office at 973-383-1570 and ask for the Advocate for the Domestic Violence Unit.

As a victim of domestic violence, you will have the opportunity to complete a Victim Impact Form to relay your thoughts and feelings to the Assistant Prosecutor assigned to your case. You will also be able to detail your losses and ask for restitution for any out-of-pocket expenses you may have incurred.
